AS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF (2021-2022)...

...I spend countless hours working on our online news site, Scot Scoop. I spent my summer redesigning the site and revamping our categories. I aim to ensure that the highest quality content is published daily. I plan lessons and give presentations in class on different styles or aspects of news writing I feel need improvement, create all of the schedules and rubrics for content, oversee my executive board, and make decisions about the publication with their input. Recently, I created a new category based on previous critiques about our disconnect from the student body. This new category, called "Student Fun," consists of Buzzfeed-style quizzes, polls, and articles that cater more to the student body.  Besides site innovation, I am also the person that all writers and editors come to with frustrations, suggestions, and struggles. It is important to me that everyone feels heard and seen within the program. I want all involved in the program to feel connected with one another and happy in their environment. To do so, I lead weekly brainstorms each week for topics, where students are encouraged to shout out ideas about potential coverage. I schedule meetings with my staff of 13 editors where we discuss issues we've been having with articles, ideas for site improvement, and simply time to bond. I have created anonymous suggestion sheets, where students who are more afraid to speak up can voice their ideas or issues with the publication. I work hard to find a balance between being supportive and comforting to all students in the program and keeping high expectations for the site's content.

AS AN EDITOR (2020-2021)...

...Most of my time is spent editing articles for publication. To me, editing is more than just fixing errors in an article before submitting; it's about contributing to the growth of the writers. Rather than just making necessary pages and hitting publish, I try to provide extensive feedback for my writers. At times, if I feel a writer could do better than what they submitted, I will send articles back with some advice on how to improve. I also try my best to be approachable and accomodating so writers feel like they can come to me for help, suggestions, or advice.
